Welcome! To Matt Fleming's SUBLIME Page

Matt's (me) story of Sublime

Sublime is my favorite band.
They played there first gig in 1988.
and back when the band started out anyone will tell you if you wanted to throw a kick ass party sublime was your bet.whereever sublime was, was the place to be.the memebers of sublime were : Brad nowell (lead singer,Lead bass player),Eric Wilson(Bass Player),Floyd "bud" Gaugh (drummer) and lou Dogg (brads pet dalmation)Sublime is one of those bands that cant be catigorized which is what makes them so unique theyre not reggae theyre not punk theyre not ska there alittle bit of everything. When sublime tried to get sighned by the labels the first were hesitent because sublime was big on the reggae phase and people werent really into it back then. The first meeting with mca records Eric Brad Bud and louie sat all day and for absoulutely nothing so brad let louie take a shit right in the ceos office. eventually sublime did get sighned by mca records due to there own tape "40 oz to freedom" which was therew own self produced tape. in testimonies from some people like mca records rep john phillips they kept in there car tape decks for like a month.Sublime was a very edgy band to book because you never knew if they were gonna show with brads newly found drug addiction to heroin he would sometimes either show up smashed or not show at all because he didnt feel like it.Sublime was very good when they did show either drunk or not brad put his heart into his music and it didnt matter if no one was listening he d play just the same. which made sublimes music so great. there second cd produced by mca was robin the hood which sold of 2,000 copies in two weeks.sublimes songs that werent writen by brad himself were bob marley songs which the band took and produced in there own freestyle way.sublime kept playing and got bigger and bigger and while they were hitting the top brad knowells tragedy happened after playing a sold out show at the phoenix theatre while on tour the band checked into a hotel in arizona as far away as possible from any corruption for brads sake they checked into a motel. the next morning brad went to wake bud up at 4 am to check out the set. after spending the whole night on the phone telling troy how much he loves and misses her and jakob, but bud basically said fuck off its to early and went back to sleep. When bud went to brads room later that day on may 25th 1996 brad nowell was found dead curled out on his bed suspectedly dieing of an overdose of heroin. That day a legend in my eyes died and his music and the good memories of him is what keeps him alive in my mind and i think bud and eric for making one of this centurys greatest bands.

Sublimes music is so great due to the heart and soul that the whole band put into their music. Its due to the vocals of one of the best singers, of this century, who sadly cant be heard live or fresh anymore, but for sublime, Im sure its the strong band they had with eatchother, and the support they got through it all. "Sublime is a hodgepodge of all types bands I have been into since I was a kid. Not like I mix it all up on purpose, but its like a subconcious type of thing. As a young kid, I was heavily into hardcore punk, like the circle jerks and black flag; then I first heard the ska sound from bands like the selector and the specials. I thought this was the best music I ever heard. Then came the rub a dub style of dance hall reggae music, which Ive never been able to get out of my head since. A little later I was into the run dmc and the whole NWA sound. I was blown away when I heard groups like boogie down productions and KRS-One mixing rap and reggae. I was devastating. Without really trying I now seem to put a dance hall style lyric melody over much of my attempts at writing other types of music. Brad Nowell

"Wed get a bottle of wine sing our songs have a good time till the police would come and tell us we couldnt play anymore. Then wed go into Naples and hang out on a bridge and play in the water where we wouldnt be bothering anyone. We were just always into music, into entertaining people. Brad would sing to his dog if there was nobody around. He was totally driven by music and the deep feelings it conjured him." Floyd "bud" Gaugh (sublimes Drummer)

" We kicked his ass numerous times, but it didnt do any good Brad knew I hated heroin. I had a friend who died in junior high from heroin These loser dudes who were older than me they gave it to my friend. It was the first time he ever did it and he died. They were in his van they freaked out drove the van to his parents house and left him.

I fucking hate heroin" Eric Wilson (sublimes Bass player)

Sublimes greatness will always be remembered by me and brad Nowell will always be my favorite and overall best singer and person and I will never forget the great present of music he gave to all his other fans and me.
